My goal is to make each class a journey. We begin by creating safe, sacred space through intention, chanting and meditation. Then we share the experience of opening ourselves to prana and allow transformation to occur. We then close the journey and awaken into our lives, more free.

Please bring a towel for the shower and another if you want to use the sauna. Bring your own tent, sleeping bags and flashlights for camping. There is limited indoor space If you want to rent a small dome for the weekend do it early, prices below in payment area.

Its that time of year again when many of us are making plans for the playa. One of the major plans is how we are getting there which often includes carpooling with other burners we may or may not know very well. I was thinking about my personal experiences with this and realized there some things I have learned over the years that are important to share with the community.

Things to remember when offering or accepting rides to and from burning man.

1) DRUGS. Truth is our community is varied, some of the people have good jobs that have security clearances or other stringent requirements that absolutely prevent them not only from partaking in any form of illegal substance, but they also would risk losing their careers if they were found to have contraband in their vehicles or on their vehicles passengers. On the other hand there are many in the community who do choose to have this as part of their life. Regardless of where you stand in life it is very important that you have this discussion with all passengers prior to accepting or offering a ride. Unfortunately however even this is not always honored, for example last year when we offered a ride to a fellow burner we were adamant that absolutely no drugs or illegal substances could be in the vehicle. Unfortunately this person chose to violate this and brought a large bag of pot along that we did not find out about until we were half way there. this person not only broke their word but also endangered the career of the vehicle owner. Fortunately they were not pulled over. However I have heard other stories that show how responsible others are, for example another burner in the community had the same rule for there passengers. When one of the passengers had some extra "gifts" left over after the burn that passenger found someone else to take the gift home in another vehicle rather than break the agreement. That is the right and honorable thing to do.

The moral: Know who your riding with, ask others does this person keep there word?

2) CASH. everyone has a different way of splitting expenses. But you need to be clear up front. If you are asking for a certain dollar contribution towards gas, get it before you leave. Things happen its better to not have this hanging in the air. Another approach is alternating who uses a card to put gas in the tank (only do this if you feel confident your passengers card will clear) I have known too many people who have had bad experiences of passengers never giving them the promised contributions, it can ruin friendships. So just get it before you leave and be firm.

3) DEPARTURES. It never fails every year I hear of someone having some issue with a passenger about departures sometimes its leaving town (they were not ready, they were not clear as to where they were at) or issues leaving the playa they would not or could not leave at the set time. Or a driver left a passenger on playa with just a note saying they left early they would have to find another ride, Or a ride had to leave due to a medical emergency only to have a passenger dangerously delay them, Or a passenger decide to leave with another person but leaves all there gear to there ride to take care of for them and take to there home, or...

you get the idea there are hundreds of things that can go wrong however some common courtesy and remembering the principles can go a long way toward handling these things appropriately.

a) set a EXACT time and location for leaving both home and the playa.

b) set how you will contact the other parties should some event require the driver to leave the playa sooner than planned (shit happens people!) Its important that you have a way to get a hold of your riders.

c)If for some reason you are a driver and must leave, you owe your riders the courtesy of letting them know face to face if at all possible.

d) IF you are a rider whose ride needs to leave for medical reasons, by all means you need to go or you need to quickly figure out how you and your gear are going home

e) If you chose to go home with others other than your planned ride you need to take your gear too. IF you can not take your gear keep in mind those hauling and dropping off your gear are doing you a HUGE favor. You need to guarantee them a secure place to drop it off and if you can’t guarantee that then you are tasking a risk with your things and that’s not the responsibility of the people who transported your gear sans you. (remember we are currently living in the highest meth use state, many burners on this list had gear stolen from yards and porches this year, have gear dropped off at your own risk)

f) if you do not show up and are packed at the pre set time.... prepare to be left. This is about radical self reliance its not others responsibility to wait on you, take care of you, pack for you or find you.

I hope these tips may help others avoid some of the pit falls of playa ride sharing this year. Every year there are stories maybe this year there will be fewer.

(x-posted for Trevor)

Howdy all,

So one of the most common things asked of me on Tuesday these days is
"Where are the rest of the burners?". This has almost become amusing to
me since it's not uncommon for the people who asked to leave and have a
few more stroll in a few minutes later asking the same question... and
repeat, you get the idea. It has also occured to us that we have a great
venue for people to show off there fabulous work. So we have decided to
make a once a month burner night!

Starting next month the first Tuesday of every month is burner Tuesday
at Fat Tuesday! We will be having a featured burner artist showing off
there work each month and Burner DJs all night long.

The idea of this night is to get YOU to participate. You dont have to be
the featured artist to bring stuff to share. We are working on getting
permission to do fire stuffs and it's looking good. Anything that will
work in a bar type venue is welcome! Most of all we want to see your
shining face help make this community happen.

So you want to be a featured artist or DJ. Excellent! Just drop us an email.

On the first one (May 6th) our feature is the lovely Corinne AKA
Krinabelle. If you have never seen her work be prepared to be amazed. I
have been told there will be snake skin involved!

Lets bring some culture back to Tempe!

Also, Matty is one of the biggest House DJs in the valley but he will be playing breaks. They both are really great guys and a really fun crowd follows each of them. It should be highly entertaining watching them play each other's music.

The first Tuesday of the month is also "Burner Tuesday" when a lot of the Burningman folk come out. If you are not super connected with us and live in Phoenix, this would be a great night to meet other crazy burner folk!

I am a yoga instructor who just moved to Phoenix from Seattle. I like to work with people one-on-one and currently have lots of openings for new students. To drum up interest and community, for a limited time I am offering sliding-scale private yoga instruction, Reiki sessions, and small group workshops (I dig the barter system!). I am also creating a schedule of free and low-cost yoga classes in gallery and studio locations throughout downtown and in natural areas surrounding Phoenix. I have some beautiful spaces to work with or I can possibly come to you and help you create space for yoga in your home. Private instruction is a brilliant way to learn a lot quickly and to understand what yoga means to you.

I help you to create energetic openings with yoga postures and infuse these openings with energy healing. I physically support you as you explore the poses and often integrate other interests such as art, music, swimming, running, hiking etc, to create a practice that is perfect for you. This combined with visualization, meditation, breath work, movement and intuitive massage fills your being with an expansive peace and revolutionary change as the energy flows freely throughout your life.
I highly recommend taking this workshop. Jon is an incredible prop artist and AZ is very fortunate to have him here willing to pass on his knowledge of poi!

Friday, March 7 - w/Alien Jon & assistant Tricia: $40 covers both classes
•	6-7:00 Fundamental forms of modern poi $20 - Covers fundamental poi concepts, exercises, and poi scales. Indispensable for the beginner, fill in holes for intermediate spinners, and give advanced spinners a chance to delve deeply into the foundation that makes all advanced moves easy to learn and flow with.
•	7-8:00 Advanced Poi and technical concepts $30 - Covers an advanced model and understanding of the spin zones around the human body so that you can spin anywhere in any orientation including behind the head and back or under the legs. This also includes inside planes and inswings in between the arms all around the body. Further exploration in the body and poi relationships as time sculpture: tracing geometry through time. This yields incredible feelings and unbelievable visual effects for your audience. For the uber-advanced we can cover 'Composite' spinning: pattern construction using independent control of each hand/poi. For example advanced hybrids.

Call the Mystic Jewell, Alien Jon, or Tricia to reserve your spot!

Teacher Bios:

Alien Jon:
Jonathan Everett has been spinning things since childhood, starting with himself, and expanding to socks with tennis balls in them and sticks found in the woods of Maine. Starting with his first pair of devilstix in 1995, he officially entered the world of object manipulation. In 1999, from a foundation built on devilstix and drawing inspiration from T'ai Ji and Aikido, he began spinning glowing objects on strings or in socks at "all night dance parties". After meeting other spinners he learned that objects had been spun in a similar manner for millennia by ancient cultures from around the world. This gave rise to the discovery of fire spinning, and his dedication to the art of contemporary poi began.
From devilstix and poi other object manipulation quickly followed: Sphereplay, staff, meteor, diabolo, and astrojax to name a few. These talents have been melded with a love of music and dance, including liquid, illusional, and funk styles. Jon loves to play and lives for the spark of innovation and creativity, while further honing his skill through diligent practice.
Jon has performed at the Fringe Benefit for the 1st Annual Boulder Fringe Festival, the 1st Annual Boulder Juggling Festival, Ratuva Circus performance and workshops, COSM Fire, the 2007 Burning Man Conclave, and with the ExtraTerrestrial Circus Experiment. He has taught classes around the country in poi, sphereplay, and devilstix at the Double Rainbow Ranch, Boulder Circus Center, 1st Annual Boulder Juggling Festival, Shepherd Valley Waldorf School, SphereCamp East and West, Domba/Mystic Jewell Dance Studio, Wildfire (CT), Florida State University, and at Renaissance Festivals country-wide. He also teaches private lessons.

Zan's:
Zan started performing in South America on tour with his brother Noah, and continues to burn with the same inspired passion as in the beginning. His training has led him far and wide, through a dozen countries and across the disciplines of spinning, dance, juggling, music, yoga, circus, martial arts, and acrobatics. Zan's specialty is dazzling fire performances, though he thrives on the challenge of a unique performance for each event, be it day or night. Whatever the occasion, Zan delivers pure entertainment with unforgettable class, style, and grace.
Known for his expertise in the theory and technique of poi and staff spinning, Zan has given workshops around the U.S. and abroad.

The first Spinagogue taught us to master the art of poi, during the second Spinagogue we were shown the way of staff. Now it’s time to broaden our horizons. Join us at The Vulcan Spinagogue for a weekend of intense object manipulation of ALL KINDS including poi, staff, double staffs, hoop, whips, juggling, contact, and more.

What is Spinagogue? Check out our past events:
July 2007 Poi intensive: youtube.com/watch
Nov 2007 Staff intensive: youtube.com/watch

Spinagogue is a weekend intensive designed to radically improve your skills while immersing you in Bay Area fire scenery: 28 workshops, three days of food, dinners are prepared by our master vegan chef Joshua the Traveling Chef (joshuaploeg.blogspot.com/), a fire jam and a special sneak preview performance by the Vulcan Crew.

The Vulcan is a hotbed of fire arts located in the heart of "lovely" industrial East Oakland. In addition to hosting the east bay's best and brightest spin jam, the Vulcan is home to over 100 local performers and artisans of all types. Five workshop spaces and living areas inside the Vulcan will host our festivities. Free lodging (sorry, just couches) will be available Friday through Sunday for participants from outside the bay area. Additionally, hotels are available locally starting at about $45 a night.

A typical day at the Vulcan? youtube.com/watch

There are two choices for participation:
1.) Immerse yourself for the full weekend intensive and choose from ANY of the available classes.
The full weekend cost $180 including food, 7 workshops of your choice and that warm, cuddly feeling in your tummy. An $80 non-refundable deposit will be required to register.

2.) Drop in for a few classes of your choice from our list of prescheduled classes.
The drop-in classes will be $30 for a single class, however if you take more than one all classes are $25 each. Meals not provided. Payment must be received before your spot is secured.

Please Note: In order to limit class size, registration will be capped at 25 full weekend participants and about 10 drop in students per class, first come first serve so register EARLY!

To register for the full weekend, send an email to Spinagogue@gmail.com with a list of your top 11 class preferences and well as your name, phone number, and whether or not you require accommodation.
Learn to spin poi the easy way: by understanding how poi works. This class is built around a series of simple exercises designed to teach you more than just tricks. By exploring how a few simple tricks relate to one another, an understanding of poi emerges that will make future learning easier.

Intermediate/Advanced Poi I - Noel Yee
Want to learn how do isolations and antispins? Know how to do them but not sure where to go next? This class will focus on practicing the basic isolations and antispins and then utilizing them to execute new and exciting techniques. These techniques include but are limited to: linear isolations, linear extensions, cat eyes and antispin triangles.

Beginning Poi – Jordan Campbell
This class will cover several of the fundamental types of motion used in poi spinning. After taking it you will have a deeper understanding of timing and direction as well as an arsenal of tricks that you can combine and modify to transform you from a novice spinner to a poi master.

Beginning Partner Poi - Silence and Ayala, of FLUX
An introductory level class covering technical moves and choreography in relation to poi duets. Technical emphasis will be on two-person interactive moves, rather than simultaneous moves. How to choreograph a routine from scratch will also be discussed. Bring a partner or find one in class.

Intermediate/Advanced Poi II - Ian Smith
This class will concentrate on the simpler things in poi: 2 beat weaves, stalls, pendulums, spinning in together time, same direction. You will learn that because of their simplicity they have the most variation possibilities and some of the variations can be quite difficult. We will also touch on the relationship between the poi and your body.

Staff

Beginning/Intermediate staff – Krissy Humphreys

Intermediate/Advanced Staff Spinning– Ian Smith
In this class is designed to fill out technique: we will take a quick tour through different ways to pass the staff from hand to hand, work on some pendulums and non-linear planes and then learn technique that uses the body like learning to use your body as a lever to move the staff and how to use the momentum of the staff to initiate body movement.

Beginning Staff – Jordan Campbell
Explore various types of staff movement, develop technique to control the staff and learn to move your body in graceful unison with the staff. After this class you will be able to spin confidently in a variety of ways and will have a clear understanding of how a staff moves and how you must move with the staff.

Dance Dance Information - Katherine Tesch
A staff can make a great dance partner. Explore staff manipulation from a dance based perspective with an emphasis on integrating body and prop.

Beginning Contact Staff – Krissy Humphreys
An introduction to contact staff manipulation with an emphasis on further learning. This class will take you through the basics of wrapping, rolling and spiraling with a staff. Hand, elbow, shoulder and neck wraps; halos and backside spirals.

Adv Contact Staff - Advanced Explorations in Contact Staff – Noel Yee
Come learn the latest advances in contact staff! Take the contact staff technique you already know and apply them in resourceful new ways. This class will focus on the use of spirals, wraps and rolls to move the staff to the less explored parts of the body, even the legs.

Doubles Staffs

Beginning/Intermediate Double Staff - Krissy Humphreys
This class is designed for beginners and will cover basic double staff technique while introducing planes, beats, timing and direction. No previous double staff experience is required.

Intermediate/Advanced Double Staff - Greg Maldonado
Learn how to create a variety of patterns and effects with two staffs by combining many different types of motion into your tricks. Beginning with an understanding of how we can move one staff, we quickly progress to two staff exercises designed to open the doors to what is called "hybrid" technique.

Beginning Double Staves – Jordan Campbell
Learn double staff from the ground up in this class designed for the beginner. After a thorough examination of the myriad ways to manipulate a staff we begin combining techniques to seamlessly integrate a second staff.

Advanced Double Staff - Krissy Humphreys
Explore further into the world of double staff manipulation. This class will focus on isolations, anti-spins, hybrids, and how to add finger spinning into our flow. Previous double staff experience is required.

Hoop

Beginner Hoop – Khan Wong
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of hooping, from the first moves every hooper should learn to the principles of establishing a solid hoop practice. We'll start with the basics: hooping on the waist, walking and turning with the hoop and lifting the hoop off the body and getting it back on. From there, passes around the body, vertical hooping and basic hand-hooping technique will be introduced. The class will move on to shoulder hooping and duck-outs depending on participant ability and interest.

Hoop Technique & Flow – Khan Wong
The focus of this workshop is to expand each hooper's range of motion and control. As such, it will not teach moves (though some will be covered) but will instead cover theory and concepts of movement applied to hoop technique. Special attention will be given to hand and body rolling techniques, isolations, antispin applications and direction changes. Participants should be able to transition easily between at least three different moves (it doesn't matter which ones) to get the most out of the class.

Juggling

Beginning Juggling - Jordan Campbell or Bree Crabtree
In this class you will learn the 3 ball cascade – the fundamental building block of juggling patterns – as well as several variations. Everyone can learn how to juggle and the class will be taught in a very simple, sequential manner to ensure that you come out of the class having learned to juggle, guaranteed.

Beginning Contact Juggling - Noel Yee
The ball moves. The ball doesn't move. Come join us in this introductory class that will teach how you to move the ball through space gracefully and then keep it still in visually engaging ways. Close attention will be paid to beginning balancing, isolations and body rolls. No experience required.

Beginning Contact Juggling - Greg Maldonado
Learn how to use the fewest number of the simplest type of prop: one ball. Combining balancing, rolling and spinning to fluidly move a ball across your body, contact juggling will broaden your idea of what juggling can be while deepening your understanding of your relationship with objects.

“Other” Props

Rope Manipulation - Ian Smith
Rope Manipulation… what’s that supposed to mean? It’s everything can do with a jump rope other than jump over it! Poi experience is helpful in this class but not required.

Club Swinging - Poki
Break free from the chains that bind you!
Club swinging bridges the gap between poi and staff -- and will increase you skill in both! You will learn: basic club handling, common poi moves with clubs, odd poi moves with clubs, and some strange looking new club moves.
See you at spinagogue! ~Poki

Beginning Rope Dart – Sam Reese
Learn how to manipulate this most mysterious of props. Half dance half martial arts, rope dart combines beautiful motions with sudden eye catching surprises. Take the first step to mastering this ancient prop.

Beginning Whip Cracking - Mushashi or Elias
Learn to use the loudest, and the most dangerous prop of them all. Safety glasses are required, please try to bring your own, we will have a limited number to loan out. This workshop will teach you the basic cracks and the importance of finesse.

Yardz, here, with some info on what we are doing for the Burn this year......

*Fire Performance,Music and Dance Camp for '08*

Right now, we are working on the presentation, camp plan, cleanup plan and everything that goes into a well organized camp for this year.

Yes, this will be a "registered" camp, with setup accomplished before anyone gets there by a group of people who will be there about three days early. It will be up and running for the rest of the participants when they get there. A list of proposed camp names are up on our yahoogroups (Stage6ProCrew) and we will be voting on the name next week. All our events will be listed in the Who What When and we will be on the BM maps and camp listings, of course.

As of now, we have about 2/3's veteran Burners, and about 1/3 Virgin burners.
Last count was 18 people, we would like to see 35 to 40 camped with us this year.
A few of us have also been working the event for the past 2 to 5 plus years also (DPW, Lamplighters, Perimeter, etc, etc.)

Any "camp fees" that are charged will be going to things like our own fresh water/grey water disposal, a shower, camp power,
our own porta potty, and fully stocked camp bar, communitty kitchen, performance and chill space and art and deco.
Right now we have a bunch of contributors, and we will be voting on the camp name this coming week.
Camp fee will be $100.00, and that does not have to be in cash, it can also be in goods or materials.
A list of what is needed will be available by the end of next week, artist renditions should be ready by end of this week.
Also a list of camp sub-managers will be available.

We will also be running an 8 cab sound system at about 13k watts, and a complete dj setup with cdj's and turntables, with sound also in the chill/lounge/bar area,
We are also setting up a dedicated fire performance space with daily workshops and a nightly "open spin", and working on getting a couple larger performance troupes to visit us,
and putting together a few, what would be considered, "headliner" DJ's to play for us,
along with our 6 resident DJ's.
...AND we may be going to Fire Conclave...Albie (Psytek) is working on that one.
If you are interested, hit him up.

Anyone who would like to camp with a well thought out,
well put together, music and fire performance camp this year,
contact me.

Yardz, clear.

ok i know i dont post much but ive got a story for ya all.
It starts out its about 10pm nye and I'm hanging up in Jerome (my home town), and who do i get to meet? The drummer from Tom Petty and the Heart Breakers. That was kind of cool all in its own right, so we get to talking and i let him know im a fire breather, and see if i can do some shameless promotion. A short time later i see the fire chief, and jokingly i asked if i could breathe at the stroke of midnight. Well he didnt think i was joking and gives me the go ahead. Now I have to scramble as I don't have any of my supplies at all and I'm out of lamp oil, So i try and find someone who is the DD to drive me to wal mart to get some ultra pure. This doesn't work (on new years heh) so i see some friends of mine and decide to give this ride thing one last attempt. After i ask voila my friend has lamp oil. We shoot down to her house like a block away grab the lamp oil and head back to town. Now I go and drop a few hints about what i'm going to do at midnight and get to setting up. Little did i know i had like 20 seconds before they started the countdown. I don't think i've set up faster from completely packed in my life. 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1. BOOOOOOOM and perform a perfect volcano like 1 second after they shout 1. Mushroom cloud and all and even a ring around the damn thing. Now as I for mentioned earlier the fire chief said ok. but apperently didnt tell the cops that night so about after the 4th or 5th breath they dart with the police car to right where i am. luckily i didn't have a mouth full of oil so i was able to convince them that the fire chief actually said yes. Meanwhile the crowd is oooohing the cops and thinking they're going to get another show. Somewhere around the lines of me getting arrested. Finally the cops leave and i go through a 2 liter bottle of lamp oil oohing and awing the crowd. Afterwards i got a complement from the drummer, which really stroked my ego. I hoped yall enjoyed the show if you were there. i know i sure did.
